TORONTO, ONTARIO--(September 10, 1998) -- Vitran Corporation Inc. (Nasdaq: VVN, TSE: ETNA), a North American transportation and logistics firm, today announced that it has completed its acquisition of Quast Transfer Inc. (Quast), a Winsted, Minnesota-based regional LTL (less-than-truckload) carrier.

As previously announced on August 4th, Quast will be combined with Vitran's existing U.S. operation to form one of the largest Central States regional LTL carriers. With the addition of Quast, Vitran's U.S. LTL operation will have 67 service centers operate in 22 states and increases its full state coverage from six to 11 in America's heartland. The Quast purchase is expected to be immediately accretive to Vitran's earnings beginning in the 1998 fourth quarter.

President and Chief Executive Office, Richard D. McGraw, said, "The completion of the Quast acquisition represents another significant step toward forging a comprehensive LTL network serving all major market areas of the United States and Canada. We continue to identify and review potential targets in the U.S., with the goal of completing at least two additional purchases over the next two years. Based on our assessment of the fragmented LTL. marketplace, we see tremendous opportunity to build value for our shareholders through our prudent consolidation plan."

Vitran Corporation Inc. is a North American group of transportation companies offering less-than-truckload, truckload, intermodal marketing, truck brokerage, and logistics.
